Carmel Mission
The historic and recently restored Carmel Mission,
located a bit south of Carmel, is one of the most beautiful in the
statewide system. This is where Father Junipero Serra established
headquarters for the Northern California mission system. It was his
residence and headquarters until his death in 1784. There are quiet
places on the grounds to rest and reflect, particularly in the
courtyards that link the Basilica, the mission museum, and various
other parish buildings.
Located at 3080 Rio Road, right on the coast, the mission is open
daily from 10am to 4pm. Rio Road is an exit off of Route One, just
south of downtown. Call (408) 624-3600 for more
information.
