Robinson Jeffers and Tor House
Tor House was the home of the late poet Robinson Jeffers. Though it is only a few miles from the center of Carmel, it feels like another world entirely.
Jeffers was a man of nature. He was also an
outspoken man of letters, and opposed the transformation of the
Monterey peninsula into a tourist's paradise. He personally built Tor
House of rough rock so that it is in harmony with the natural
landscape. He also built a stone tower that affords a magnificent
view of the ocean. Many of his manuscripts remain, as do personal
artifacts of his life. Tours cost $5 and can be arranged by calling
the Tor House Foundation at (408) 624-1813.
